Alumni Advisory Committee 2023-2024

Hi, everyone! My name is Erin Langan, and I’m from Ridgeley, WV. I’m a recent WVU alumna, having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Linguistics, and I’m returning to WVU to pursue a master’s degree.

I first learned of WVU’s chapter of Global Brigades late in my undergraduate career as a senior at a student organization fair. After speaking with the Brigades Medical President at the time and learning more about the organization, I felt a strong desire to get involved. I was lucky enough to get accepted for the Spring 2023 Brigade to Panama, and I learned so much about the world through the brigade itself and the associated activities. Being involved with Brigades, especially at WVU, is truly an experience unlike any other. Not only does our chapter work hard to empower communities in other countries and areas of the world, but it also strives to empower the WVU community, the Morgantown community, and those within the chapter through service-based activities and educational opportunities in the Morgantown area. I joined Brigades without really knowing anyone involved, and, although I’m a pre-medical student, I was a little intimidated by the fact that I wasn’t a STEM major. Yet, I learned quickly that even if you join the organization as a stranger, you leave as a friend – and you do so better able to address the inequities of the world with a sociological perspective you may not have had before joining, regardless of your major or background. As long as you have a true desire to show up, work hard, and learn (even in ways that might take you out of your comfort zone in the best sense possible), you will feel right at home in WVU’s Global Brigades chapter. I encourage you to apply, and I’m excited to get to know you!
