Brigading for Better Health
Over Spring Break this year, a group of 68 Mountaineers worked on brigade across rural Panama. The group collaborated with Panamanian medical and dental professionals in three different communities, serving approximately 1200 patients in clinic. The group spent several days helping to facilitate medical and dental clinics in the Chiriqui Province of Panama. In the clinics the students and faculty work with local professionals to manage triage, consultation, dental clinics, pharmacy, and educational charlas for the patients. They also spent two days working on public health projects related to water. They also had a research day doing groundwork ethnographic work with Global Brigades staff in preparation for future brigades. The group visited a sixth local community where they were able to discuss public health issue with local leaders and be immersed into various cultural experiences.
