Hello everyone! My name is Luke Markowski, and I am a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering from Pittsburgh, PA.
I first learned about brigades while attending a student organization fair at the start of my freshman year. The more I learned and became involved with Global Brigades, the more I came to appreciate the depth of preparation, education, and intentionality that goes into every aspect of their work. I’ve had the opportunity to join two brigades, most recently traveling to Panama this past spring. During that trip, I shadowed local medical professionals, helped with triage, contributed to health education efforts through charla , and assisted with the UNICEF clean water initiative. One of the most valuable takeaways for me was gaining a broader perspective on medicine, one that considers social and structural factors that shape health outcomes. What sets Global Brigades apart is its commitment to a comprehensive, community-centered model that integrates public health, economic development, and infrastructure improvement. The curriculum offered through the organization ensures that students not only participate, but also understand the complex needs of the communities we serve. Here at WVU, our chapter is committed to that mission, both abroad and locally through food pantries in the Morgantown area. I'm excited about continuing this work in West Virginia, and during our upcoming brigade next spring. If you’re passionate about making a sustainable impact and learning about global health equity, I highly encourage you to apply. Also, check out the Global Brigades website to see how your involvement fits into a much larger vision. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Professor Brewster or anyone on the leadership team—we’d love to help you get involved!
