Hi there! My name is Rachel Nieman, and I’ve served as a faculty chaperone for three WVU Global Medical and Dental Brigades. I work at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics as the Director of Recruitment and Retention and am a proud three-time graduate of WVU.

My professional interests include college student support services, including recruitment, first-year experience, remediation services, academic support, student engagement, administration of scholarships and more. I developed and manage the Chambers Peer Mentorship program and teach its associated teaching practicum course. My academic interests lie in the realm of college student development. I am especially interested in leaning into WVU’s land grant mission to support rural students from West Virginia. I love how Professor Brewster connects our work in rural areas abroad with supporting rural areas at home!

I strive to bring a lens of student development and leadership to the course by explaining how an experiential and global experience like Brigades is so much more than a line on a student’s resume – it contributes to a student’s academic, professional, and personal growth. Seeing students grow as they fully engage with their education is the absolute best part of working in higher education, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this organization.
