Hi! I’m Sophia Flower, and I am a senior Biology student, minoring in Appalachian Studies from Fairmont, West Virginia.

I was encouraged to join Global Brigades by my good friend and fellow team member, Olivia Dowler. Almost immediately, I knew that Brigades was a place where I could use my strengths, along with the strengths of my classmates, to help my own community here in Morgantown and communities abroad. I was inspired by the holistic model of Global Brigades, and I believe that the experiences Brigades provides creates educated, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals. My experience with Brigades has allowed me to grow personally and professionally. As an aspiring medical professional, our 2022 Panama Brigade taught me the importance of public health and sociological awareness in the practice of medicine. This organization has also given me a strong support system of likeminded individuals to lean on throughout my life. By creating a relationship between members and the communities we work with, Brigades creates a sustainable change in both groups.
