Charla Co-Chair 2024-present

Hi! I’m Sam Ulicny, and I am a junior majoring in Immunology & Medical Microbiology from Allentown, PA.

After going to the first info session, I knew Brigades was a great opportunity that would help me grow in a variety of ways. I was initially drawn to join brigades because of their holistic approach to uplifting resource-reduced communities and their mission to empower and collaborate with local leaders. After going on two brigades to Panama and Honduras, these experiences and the preparation that goes along with it have taught me about rural health and the disparities that lie within it. Working with my fellow brigaders, the faculty mentors, and the local community has been one of the most rewarding experiences. It is a unique combination of experiential education, service, and sociological reflection that develops and increases your awareness of health determinants that can be seen abroad and in Appalachia. Brigades has also introduced me to some great people that motivate and inspire everyone around them to find their passion and support them in any way they can. Brigades is a great way to start exploring different aspects of healthcare and exploring medicine and public health through a sociological lens. I encourage you to look further into the Global Brigades mission to see if the organization is the right fit for you, and feel free to reach out with any questions!
