Dental Brigades Vice-President 2025-2026

Hi! My name is Gavin Corbin, and I am a senior Biology major with a minor in medical humanities and health studies. I'm originally from Ashburn, Virginia.

I was introduced to Global Medical and Dental Brigades during a lecture in one of my Sociology classes taught by Professor Brewster. As I listened to him talk about the different tasks they take on during the brigades such as clinics, research and cultural immersion I found myself even more curious about GMDB. I decided to attend the information session about GMBD where I saw Professor Brewster and the leaders present detailed information. They covered the inner workings of the program and how to achieve a successful brigade. After the informational session I knew I wanted to be a part of this group and didn't want to miss the opportunity to apply. I felt I wanted to do something beyond the scope of my day to day experiences but also have the opportunity to help facilitate medical attention to others. Before my first brigade to Panama, I was nervous due to having limited experience in the dental field and never having been on a brigade. The feeling of being unprepared left after just a couple small group meetings, triage practice, and lectures with Professor Brewster. The preparation, planning, and organization of the GMDB is very meticulous allowing for more confidence leading up to the brigade. In Panama I was able to immerse myself in the culture and communities that we were serving. I found much beauty in embracing each walk of life, I came into contact with. This experience allowed me to foster new friendships with other students at WVU I may have never known. During clinics I had the chance to work closely with local dentists understanding the different techniques used without having the benefit of advanced technology or resources. The experiences I had throughout Global Brigades have been very valuable in shaping who I am as well as helping to confirm the career I want to pursue.
