Hi! My name is Alexandra Triplett, and I'm currently a Master's student in Exercise Physiology at WVU, hoping to attend medical school after graduation.
I first learned about Global Medical and Dental Brigades from a friend in the summer before my senior year of undergrad, and after learning more about the organization's model and mission, I knew I wanted to be involved. I didn't expect the experience to change the way I view and think about healthcare as much as it did, and I value that. I also came out of the whole experience with a greater interest and appreciation for rural healthcare. Through Dr. Brewster's course and our time in Panama, I developed a much deeper understanding of the social, cultural, and economic factors that shape health, and learned the importance of approaching every patient individually and with awareness. Global Brigades’ holistic model allows us to bring a comprehensive and community centered approach to care with the ultimate goal of addressing some of the core disparities that affect the health of those in the communities we work with.
I also enjoyed the opportunity to use my Spanish fluency to directly connect with medical professionals and community members, and I look forward to working with new brigaders to bridge the language barrier through my role as charla co-chair. The brigade last spring gave me perspective, skills and experience that I'll carry with me throughout my career, and I'm excited to help future brigaders have that same experience!
