Hi there! My name is Chloe Thomas, and I am a senior studying Neuroscience and Psychology from Martinsburg, WV.
I learned about brigading after seeing an Instagram post from someone I went to high school with, whom I greatly admired and respected. I reached out to her for more information and began to discover what Global Brigades and the WVU chapters embody. Global Brigades focuses on holistic sustainability through collaboration, not dependence. Prior to departure, we learn about prominent medical sociology and public health topics such as the social determinants of health. These concepts are highly influential to healthcare accessibility everywhere, but are especially important in resource-reduced regions, not only where Global Brigades operates but also in our own Appalachian community. While brigading, I’ve worked in triage and shadowed doctors in consultation, seeing things I once thought were only theoretical happen to people in a very real way. The Charla health education initiatives and public health projects we participate in provide a hands-on way to work toward long-term sustainable change. But despite some adverse situations, I’ve seen how members of the communities we’ve worked with uplift and look out for each other, a quality similar to that of many who grew up in West Virginia and the greater Appalachian area. I plan to pursue a Master's in Public and/or Global Health after I graduate, which is something I probably never would have considered had it not been for brigading or Professor Brewster’s guidance. I can say without a doubt that brigading has been and always will be the most fulfilling, joyful, and informative experience of my WVU days, and I am so excited to return to Panama for my third brigade. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or are looking for ways to get involved! :)
