Hi everyone. My name is Emma, I am a sophomore in the nursing program from Johnstown, PA.
I first heard about WVU’s Global Medical and Dental Brigades in my freshman biology class in the fall. I knew it was something that I needed to get into, as I didn’t know anyone on campus yet. Brigade takes a new approach to healthcare that you don’t get to see very often in the United States. The emphasis on understanding sociological factors in healthcare makes this organization stand apart from all others. This organization prepared me and taught me things that no other college class or organization ever could. From how to take basic vital signs to handling intense culture shock in the medical setting, Brigades prepared me for it. College classes don’t teach us how to handle these kinds of interactions and I think it is easily one of the most important parts of healthcare in general. You must first understand your patient’s situation and background before you are able to properly treat them based on their needs and what is available to them. The difference we all make on each region we go to is truly life-changing for the communities and provided me with an entirely unique perspective on how to adapt to patient needs that vary greatly from person to person. Translating for the community and healthcare providers is truly such a rewarding task and eliminates the “gap” between patients and physicians. This upcoming year I am serving as Charla Co-Chair. In this position I will be helping our group with all things Spanish related, and preparing us all for our in-country interactions. Although I was scared at times that I wouldn’t fit in or wouldn’t perform well in-country, this organization thoroughly prepared me and brought me some of the very best friendships I have ever had. If you are looking for an opportunity to learn about the overlooked features of healthcare, expand your Spanish knowledge, or work with some of WVU’s very best students, I cannot recommend enough for you to apply for our upcoming Brigade. If you have any questions for me please reach out, I am heavily looking forward to serving you all and this organization this year!
