Medical Brigades Vice President 2024-present; Charla Co-Chair 2023-2024

Hi! My name is Christopher Smith, and I am originally from Point Pleasant, WV. I am a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Molecular Medicine.

I first heard about WVU’s Global Medical and Dental Brigades from a presentation my sophomore year given by current medical president Sandrik Tabidze. Here, I first came to understand how this organization is unlike any other on campus and unlike any other study abroad experiences. I have always been looking to make the most of my college experience, and I have always wanted to make other people’s lives better with everything that I do. GMDB gave me the perfect chance for an experiential learning opportunity that benefited more than just myself. When I first joined the organization I was very worried because I did not know anybody else in it. However, I quickly felt comfortable with those around me and since then have formed many lifelong friends through this organization. Coming from a non-medical background when I first joined, I worried that I did not have what it takes to be successful on a brigade. However, through lectures, small group meetings, and a lot of practice we were able to prepare as a large group and complete two very successful brigades in my time in the organization. During my two brigades, to Panama and Honduras, I have got to learn a lot about local medicine and medicinal techniques, and I have been able to experience the local culture and people. I have also learned so much about my peers, medicine, and myself. As a part of this organization, I helped out at local food drives and took two courses learning about the sociological aspects of medicine. These experiences have been highly beneficial for me and have helped me become who I am today and find a career trajectory for my life. I highly encourage you to look more into this experience through the Global Brigades main page and by reaching out to ask any questions you may have. If you would like to ask any questions directly to me feel free to reach out!
